What You Can Do About the ‘Fat Person’ Staring at You in the Mirror

Many people who are overweight have struggled with this issue and their body image, for a large part of their lives. They don’t like what they see when they look into a mirror. Some people avoid looking into mirrors at all, because they hate looking at themselves. Eventually, however, every overweight person needs to face up to their size, and the way it makes them feel about themselves and the way they look. Does this describe you? If so, what can you do about the way you feel?

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

You didn’t put all that weight on overnight. It took a long time, probably years, to gain it, and it’s going to take a long time to lose it too. So don’t beat yourself up about how you look now. Just look at yourself long and hard in the mirror, and make up your mind what you can change, and what you want to change. Visualize those changes on your body, and imagine how it will feel. Once you imagine that, then you can achieve it. Turn around your negative feelings, start thinking positively, and you can then start to change how you feel about yourself as well as how you look.

Work with What You’ve Got

All of us are born with certain unique characteristics as a result of genetics such as our bone structure, body shape, skin and eye color. These are the basic ingredients you have to work with. There are only certain things you can change, therefore. For example you could change your hairstyle, or take better care of your skin and your face. Small things like these can brighten up your outlook, so begin with these, so you can start to look the way you want others to see you.

Do Something About Your Weight

You have to take action if you want your appearance to change. Find out what you need to know about how to change those things you want to. If you have already tried to lose weight and not succeeded, then ask for expert advice.

A medical professional or personal trainer will be able to help you to work out a plan for achieving your desired body shape, within the limits of what can reasonably be expected. If you have already lost some weight but you still see a ‘fat person’ when you look in the mirror, maybe you are so accustomed to seeing yourself as fat that you can’t change that image. This might mean that you need to seek help from a weight loss support group or qualified counselor.

Always bear in mind that you are a terrific, beautiful person. All you have to do is be good to yourself.
